Ascent to the refuge from Gardeccia Trentino or Nova Levante South Tyrol
How to reach the Re Alberto 1° refuge on a normal hiking trail or with equipment on a secured via ferrata
From Trentino you can reach the Re Alberto 1° hut via the village of Gardeccia, at 1949 metres above sea level. The village of Gardeccia can be reached from:
» Pera di Fassa: by chairlifts Vajolet 1, Vajolet 2 and Pian Pecei and then by forest trail (about 30 minutes).
» Vigo di Fassa: take the Rosengarten cable car and then follow path no. 540 (about 30 minutes).
From here, a comfortable forest path (no. 546) leads to the Vajolet hut (2243 metres), which takes about 1 hour.
The second half of the trail (No. 542) leads up a path full of rocks and gravel; the most challenging passages are supported by a convenient iron rope which allows both adults and children to cross safely.
There are no particularly dangerous spots and there is no need for climbing equipment. But please keep in mind that this is the only way to get down from the Re Alberto 1° hut.
You can reach the hut Re Alberto 1st even from South Tyrol, starting from the hut Fronza Coronelle at 2.337 mt. The rifugio Fronza Coronelle can be reached from:
» Nova Levante / Welschnofen: take the cable car Nova Levante and the chairlift King Laurin I and II.
» Passo Costalunga / Karerpass: by Paolina chairlift and via the Masarè route No. 552-549 (duration: approx. 1 hour)
» Passo Nigra / Nigerpass - Frommer Alm: with the new cablelift King Laurin I and II
From the hut Fronza Coronelle you can choose between the following hiking trails to reach the hut Re Alberto 1st:
» Put on the obligatory mountaineering equipment (helmet, climbing harness with ropes and shock absorbers) and proceed to path no. 542, along the via ferrata
Passo Santner until you reach the pass of the same name (at an altitude of 2.734 metres, duration: 2 hours). Finally you reach the Re Alberto 1° hut in 15 minutes on a good path.
» Go up to the Passo delle Coronelle/ Tschagerjoch on path no. 550 with easy to moderate difficulty (duration: 45 minutes). Once you have crossed the hill, you descend a well-marked gravel path and take the junction of path no. 541 to the Vajolet hut (duration: 1.30 hours). From there, take path no. 542 through the “gorge of towers” up to the Rifugio Re Alberto 1° (45 minutes).
